PASSPORT INFORMATION:

A Bangladesh passport is a travel document issued by the Government of Bangladesh ONLY to its citizens for the purpose of international travel. It must be either in the custody of the bearer or of a person duly authorized by its bearer. If lost or destroyed, the fact and circumstances must be immediately reported to the Passport Office in Bangladesh or the nearest Bangladesh Mission and to the local police authorities. Issuance of a passport can be denied on grounds of suppression of facts or submission of incorrect information. Any willful damage to passport or unauthorized changes/corrections on a passport will render it invalid. A passport, upon request, may be issued to a Bangladeshi national on the following grounds:

·    The passport has completed or is about to complete 10 years;

·    The pages of the passport has exhausted or is about to exhaust;

·    The passport has been damaged;

·    The passport has been lost/stolen/destroyed.

·    Children, endorsed earlier in their mother's passport may also apply for a separate passport.

PLEASE KEEP A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR PASSPORT IN A SAFE PLACE. WITHOUT DETAILS OF THE PREVIOUS PASSPORT, ISSUANCE OF A PASSPORT MAY SIGNIFICANTLY BE DELAYED. 

Passport Services by Mail:

Application for a new passport booklet against an expired/damaged/page exhausted passport may be serviced by mail. However, application for a new passport against a lost/stolen/destroyed passport is NOT accepted by mail. In such cases, the applicant has to appear in person at the Embassy to submit the application. Once the application is accepted for processing, the new passport may be DELIVERED by mail.

Applying for a Passport:

The following sections provide guidelines on how to apply for a passport. Please note that the guidelines provided in this page are indicative. The Embassy reserves the right to request for any additional documents at any stage for scrutiny by the Consular Officer before rendering any service.

Issuance of a passport against expired (10 years) /page exhausted /damaged passport:

The holder of a passport may apply for issuance of a new passport in case of the following:

·   If the existing passport has completed 10 years of validity, or

·   The existing passport will complete 10 years in the next six months, or

·   The pages of the passport have been exhausted due to use, or

·   The passport has only 3 pages left, or

·   The passport has been damaged partially or fully.

·   The following documents are required to be submitted:

1. Completed Passport Application Form in duplicate. Application forms must be filled in fully, legibly and accurately (preferably typed or filled in with a computer). The form must be signed at all requested places. Incomplete application form will not be processed.

2.  4 (four) passport size photographs.

3.  Passport Processing Fees is payable in cash in US Dollar.

4. Existing passport (in original) [Please note that the existing passport will be attached (stapled) with the newly issued passport, which will have reference of the existing passport. The holder should not separate the booklets]

5.  In case of a female applicant, who wishes to replace father's name with husband's name (mentioned at Sl. 9 in the application form), the applicant should provide a copy of her marriage certificate.

Please note the following:

a) Validity: The new passport will be valid, either for ten years from the date of issuance or for five years from the date of expiry of the existing (old) passport, whichever is earlier.

b) Issuance of a passport against a passport which has lost its validity long time back: If the passport has not been renewed for more than five years, it has to be renewed to the present times before issuance of a new passport. In such a case the applicant has to pay renewal fees for the entire elapsed period i.e. from date of expiry to the present. In addition, the applicant has to pay fees for issuance of a new booklet. On receipt of such applications, the old passport will be renewed (upto the present times) and a new passport will be issued for five years (from the new expiry date of the old passport). Both the passports will be stapled together and returned to the holder. The new passport will have reference of the old passport.

c) Interview: Personal appearance at the Consulate for interview is not obligatory in such cases.

d) Service by mail: Application for new passport booklet against an expired / page exhausted /damaged passport may be RECEIVED and DELIVERED by mail.

Issuance of passport to children who were endorsed earlier in their mother's passport

Children endorsed earlier in their mother's passport may also apply for a new passport. But, in such a case the applicant has to appear in person at the Embassy with his/her guardians and submit the following:

1.  Completed Passport Application Form in duplicate. Application forms must be filled in fully, legibly and accurately (preferably typed or filled in with a computer). The form must be signed at all requested places. Incomplete application form will not be processed.

2.   4 (four) passport size photographs.

3.   Passport Processing Fees : US$ 100.00

4.   Mother's passport (valid or expired);

5.  Photocopy of the first nine pages of mother's passport

Please note that:

a) Interview: The applicant must come in person for an interview with the consular officer at the time of submission of application along with his/her guardian.

b) Validity: Validity of the new passport will be five years from the date of issuance.

c) Service by mail: Applications for a separate passport for children, endorsed earlier to mother's passport, are not accepted by mail.

Applications received by mail are processed within the stipulated time (please note that the processing time does not include the time taken in mail). However, this time schedule does not apply in case REFERENCE HAS TO BE MADE TO COMPETENT AUTHORITIES IN BANGLADESH. In such cases the applicant will be informed by the Embassy.

Fees are payable to the Embassy of Bangladesh, Hanoi in cash in US Dollar.

Validity of a Passport:

Validity of the new passport (issued against an existing passport on expiry of 10 years validity) will be for five years from the date of expiry of existing passport or from the date of issuance of the new passport, whichever is earlier. In case, the passport is issued against a damaged/page exhausted passport, the validity of the (new) passport (usually termed as DUPLICATE passport) will be that of the existing passport. In case the passport is issued against a lost/ stolen /destroyed passport, the validity of the new passport will be for two years from the date of issue. Validity of passport issued to children after separation from mother's passport is five years from the date of issuance.

Renewal of Passport

Upon expiry of validity, a passport should be renewed by the applicant. It can be renewed upto 10 years from the date of its issuance. To renew a passport, the applicant must submit the following:

1.       02 Completed Passport Application Form.

2.       03 passport size photographs

3.       Passport

4.       Prescribed Fees US$ 100.00

Please note the following:

·         Calculation of years: The number of years (for renewal) is calculated from the date of expiry of the passport. Any fraction of a year is deemed as a full year in calculating fees. Please see the Prescribed Fees for details.

·         Maximum validity: An existing passport can be renewed up to 10 years from the date of issuance.

·         What happens after completion of 10 years?: If the passport has completed 10 years of validity, application should be made for issuance of a new passport booklet. The new passport will be issued for a period upto 5 years from the date of expiry of the existing (old) passport. Then both the passports will be stapled together and returned to the applicant. ·         What happens if the passport has been lying without renewal for a long time?: If the passport has not been renewed for a long time (suppose 7-8 years or more), then it has to be renewed to the present date (the date of application) even if the total period exceeds 10 years (from the date of first issuance). Then a new passport will be issued. Both the old and new passport would then be stapled together and returned to the applicant. In such cases the applicant has to submit two applications: 

a) Application for renewal of the number of years elapsed since date of expiry; 

b) Application for issuance of a fresh passport. The amount payable for these two services needs to be submitted separately along with each form.

·         Mail in Service: Applications for renewal of passports may be RECEIVED and DELIVERED by mail.
